For years, Indian travelers memorized the ₹50,000 limit. That number has finally changed. Effective February 2, 2026, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has updated the Baggage Rules, bringing relief to millions of international passengers.
What Changed on February 2, 2026?
The Ministry of Finance notified two major changes that affect every Indian traveling abroad:
- Increased Allowance: The general duty-free allowance for adult passengers has been raised from ₹50,000 to ₹75,000.
- Simplified Rules: The distinction between trip duration (3 days vs. more) has been removed. The ₹75,000 limit applies to all passengers regardless of stay duration.
✅ Quick Summary
You can now bring personal items (electronics, clothes, shoes, etc.) worth up to ₹75,000 without paying a single rupee in customs duty. This is in addition to your one duty-free laptop.
The Laptop Exemption (Still Free!)
A common confusion is whether laptops are included in the ₹75,000 limit. They are not.
Under Rule 3 of the Baggage Rules (which remains unchanged), every passenger over 18 years of age is allowed to import one laptop computer (notebook computer) over and above the general duty-free allowance.
Example scenario:
You can bring: 1. One MacBook Pro (Value: ₹1,50,000) → Duty Free (Laptop Rule)
2. One iPhone 17 (Value: ₹70,000) → Duty Free (General Allowance < ₹75k)
Total Value: ₹2,20,000. Total Duty: ₹0.

DID YOU KNOW?
NEW: Duty-free allowance is now ₹75,000 (up from ₹50,000) as of Feb 2, 2026.
What Changes on April 1, 2026?
Currently, if you exceed the ₹75,000 limit, you pay a flat customs duty rate of 38.5% (Basic Customs Duty 35% + Cess).
However, in the Union Budget 2026-27, the Finance Minister announced a reduction in the Basic Customs Duty (BCD) for baggage from 35% to 10%, effective April 1, 2026.
⏰ DUTY DROPS 50% ON APRIL 1, 2026
In 43 days, customs duty falls from 20% → 10%
Your savings jump to ₹15,000 after April 1
This ensures that even if you pay duty, the effective rate will drop drastically from ~38.5% to ~11%. This will make buying high-value items like the iPhone 17 Pro Max even cheaper from abroad.
Digital Declaration: No More Paper Forms
Gone are the days of filling widely confusing forms on the flight. The Customs department now mandates the use of the Atithi App for passengers with dutiable goods.
How to use it:
- Download 'Atithi' from App Store or Play Store.
- Sign up 3 days before your flight.
- Enter your flight details and list of high-value items.
- The app generates a QR code. Show this at the Red Channel counter.
Using the app speeds up your exit and shows intent to declare, which officers appreciate.
Is Dubai Shopping Worth It Now?
With the limit increased to ₹75,000, most mid-range electronics, watches, and accessories now fall completely within the duty-free bracket. For high-end items like the iPhone 17 Pro, paying duty on the excess amount usually still works out cheaper than Indian retail prices.
